All this, set against a tapestry of varied and sometimes breathtaking scenery which can be witnessed at close quarters on a spectacular cruise through the Yangtze Gorge. China was virtually closed to the outside world for more than half a century but has embraced modernity in recent years in a simply staggering fashion.
